Having just checked out your myspace, where you said: "My greatest hero is my father. He is the most hard working, self-sacrificing person I know. He has taught me through example the true meaning of friendship, about caring more for others than yourself, and how to get up and face every day regardless of what it holds in store." made me comment back to you. Not having a myspace, I will comment here. What a profound and true statement this is. I know that he is proud of the woman you have become.
Well, I am not sure proud is the exact word I would use. He mostly stays frustrated with me. As a parent I realize what it feels like to have certain dreams for you children, but as a child I see how hard it is for him to let go of his dreams and embrace mine. It crushed him when I turned into a cheerleader and boy crazy teenager. I'm not sure he has ever recovered. I'm constantly telling him that I am not 16 anymore. He is however my hero. He works desperately hard for his family and never puts his own wants or needs in front of others. He is a generous man. Which does get him in trouble sometimes. But I guess he can usually see that going in. I do consider him my hero. I think most little girls feel that way. Even though I am a woman now I suppose I am still his little girl.
I am sure that he is proud. Probably frustrated as well, but that will not deminish the pride.
As a parent, it is dificult to allow your children to grow up. Not that you have any options in the matter. You will always be his little girl, just as Meredith and Samantha are still little girls in my mind.
Everything you say about your father is true. I have very much respect for him because of it. I think he is also one of the smartest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. I am sure that he knows what he is getting into every time. But like you noted, it does not stop him.
For what it is worth, I am proud of the woman you have become as well. Being a mom is a full time job, and that is on top of going to work. You have a lovely family. Keep up the great job.
